The Seville Fair 2024
The Seville Fair, also known as the Feria de Abril (April Fair), is one of the most famous festivals in Spain, held annually in the Andalusian city of Seville. It typically takes place two weeks after Easter, lasting for about a week. The fairgrounds are located in the Los Remedios neighbourhood, where hundreds of Casetas (marquee tents) are set up. When we arrived in Seville , I have to confess we knew little of the Fair or it’s origins but once we became aware of the format it didn’t take long to decide to extend our stay to experience it.
The origins of the Seville Fair can be traced back to the 19th century when it began as a livestock fair. Over time, it evolved into the vibrant celebration of Andalusian culture, music, dance, and gastronomy that it is today.
During the fair, the streets are filled with locals and tourists dressed in traditional flamenco attire, adding to the colourful atmosphere. Horse-drawn carriages parade through the streets, and flamenco music and dance performances can be enjoyed throughout the day and night.
Each Caseta is hosted by a particular group, such as a family, business, or social club, and they typically feature music, dancing, food, and drinks. Some Casetas are private, while others are open to the public, offering visitors a chance to experience the warmth and hospitality of Andalusian culture.
The fair officially kicks off with the "Alumbrado," the lighting ceremony, where thousands of lights illuminate the fairgrounds. From then on, the festivities continue non-stop with flamenco performances, bullfights, and various cultural events. It goes on all night , confirming the nature of the Spanish as being night owls.
Traditional Andalusian cuisine is a highlight of the Seville Fair, with specialties such as pescaíto frito (fried fish), jamón ibérico (Iberian ham), and tapas galore. The fair is also known for its variety of wines, sherries, and cocktails, making it a gastronomic delight for visitors.
The horses and traditional dress were the stand out point for us , males and females ride horse back around the locality or in carriages , it’s a sight not to be missed and once experienced will not easily be forgotten. Click on the images in the below gallery to experience the images full size.
Overall, the Seville Fair is a joyful celebration of Andalusian culture, attracting people from all over the world to experience its unique blend of tradition, music, dance, and culinary delights.
