Motorhome Pilgrimage: Exploring the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fátima

For the second time in a year we pulled into The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fátima, located in Fátima, Portugal, it is one of the most famous Catholic pilgrimage sites in the world.

It's dedicated to the Virgin Mary, who reportedly appeared to three shepherd children—Lucia dos Santos and her cousins Francisco and Jacinta Marto—in 1917. The apparitions, which occurred six times between May and October of that year, drew international attention and led to the rapid growth of Fátima as a place of pilgrimage.

Helen and I are Christians , but not Catholics so much of the processes and reglious doctrines are not familar to us but we still found this place to have an incredible atmosphere of peace and reverence.

Motorhome parking is permitted in a designated area and there are toilets, showers and fresh water from a tap for drinking but not for tank filling, but there is no black water disposal. We have previously produced a video, detailing more precisely the story of this important place for Catholics. If you prefer to watch rather than read, the link is at the bottom of the page.

The sanctuary complex comprises several buildings, including the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary, which houses the tombs of the three , who were canonised as saints by Pope Francis in 2017. The basilica's imposing facade and interior are adorned with intricate artwork and religious symbols, reflecting the devotion of millions of pilgrims who visit each year.

Another significant structure within the sanctuary is the Chapel of the Apparitions, built at the exact location where the Virgin Mary is believed to have appeared to the children. This simple yet profoundly symbolic chapel is the focal point of prayer and reflection for pilgrims who come to Fátima seeking spiritual solace and divine intervention.

Throughout the year, especially on significant dates such as May 13th and October 13th—the anniversaries of the first and final apparitions—Fátima attracts hundreds of thousands of pilgrims from around the world, making it a vibrant centre of religious devotion and cultural exchange. The sanctuary also hosts various religious ceremonies, processions, and events.

Beyond its religious significance, the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fátima holds historical and cultural importance, serving as a symbol of faith, hope, and peace for people of all backgrounds. It continues to inspire believers and non-believers alike, drawing visitors to its sacred grounds in search of spiritual enlightenment and renewal.

Several Popes have visited the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fátima over the years, underlining its significance within the Catholic Church.

Most recent was Pope Francis in May 2017, who visited to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the apparitions.

These visits by successive Popes have reinforced the importance of Fátima as a significant pilgrimage site.
