Ceramic Coating - Is it worth it.
If your experience of Ceramic Coating is anything like mine, then the only time I have ever considered it, albeit fleetingly, is when sat in a car or motorhome showroom , as the sales person, not content on the emptying my bank account in relation to the vehicle purchase, but is also intent on squeezing from me all remaining loose change I have , by suggesting you pay extra for ceramic coating.
I always decline, as like GAP insurance , ceramic coating is something that dealers always over charge for and the product is often not the best on the market . When it comes to Ceramic Coating there is good stuff verses the buffed in calamine lotion type substitute. hard to be sure there is any coating on at all when new isn’t it , all new vehicles gleam right ! . So when we bought our motorhome I remained resistant , it made made feel strangely powerful until I remembered that I was sat there in the devils den , having just surrendered the shirt off my back.
However 12 months on and I realised that we needed some paint protection and here’s why. We live in area where storage of caravans and motorhomes is prevented by Deed , and so a local storage area is a requirement , but finding one in Norfolk that is not under trees is a problem. Hence the problem of moss , bird deposits and tree sap that make the constant paintwork attention a must. Yearly or biyearly valeting is not a cheap option but a necessary one here.
It isn’t just the cost however, I hate polishing anything. I know this will not sit well with some , who like nothing better than to toil with Autoglym or equivalent until their pride and joy gleams in the sunlight , that’s not me but massive respect to those that do.
So for us a coat of Ceramic is the answer and PP Protect were the company recommended to us by Steve Radford from the Roaming Radfords YouTube Channel , and Karina and Jules from Here we tow, two sources we trust.
So off we went to the Midlands at the beginning of the month to have this treatment applied. We also had the interior of the van valeted including a special treatment designed to make it spotless inside.
Great company to do business with , Richard and his team are very thorough and we were even offered a hire car.
The paint work is stripped back and the coating then seals it from any further impregnation. Cleaning is now something of a pleasure even for a non polisher like me.
Valeting and coating inside and out amounts to £799 + VAT ( on the day price - it may go up) and thats a chunk of money, but it last for five years so it works out for us similar to the twice yearly valeting costs.
Now the van just needs a soapy wash and it looks like new.
